M3 Barrier Housing Facility

The M3 Barrier Facility at UC Davis is a high-health status, restricted-entry facility designed to ensure optimal animal care and pathogen control. Key features include:

  • Restricted Access: Entry is limited to authorized personnel who adhere to strict protective protocols, including sterilized uniforms, masks, and gloves.
  • Sterile Environment: Individually ventilated caging systems and sterile handling under laminar flow stations.
  • Health Screening: Quarterly pathogen screenings using dirty bedding sentinels and periodic testing of embryo transfer recipients upon weaning.

MBP Vivarium (Conventional Housing)

The MBP Vivarium is a clean barrier facility with additional quarantine housing for mice from external institutions. Key features include:

  • Controlled Entry: Limited to animal care personnel with strict PPE protocols.
  • Clean Breeding Rooms: Mice are either rederived into the facility, sourced from approved clean vendors, or imported from health-screened institutions.
  • Quarantine Facility: Physically separate from the clean vivarium, designed to house mice from institutions with varying health statuses.
  • Health Screening: For comprehensive monitoring, quarterly pathogen screening using dirty bedding sentinels from a clean barrier source containing nude and furred mice.
