Phenotyping Services

Ensure the highest standards of care with vivaria services, providing expertly managed environments and comprehensive support for your research animals with the Mouse Biology Program.

The Mouse Biology Program (MBP) provides comprehensive phenotyping services to support diverse research needs. Our offerings include morphological, metabolic, behavioral, and pathological assays to characterize adult mice and embryos. In addition, MBP integrates OMICS services—including metabolomics, proteomics, and transcriptomics—with traditional phenotyping approaches to provide a deeper understanding of molecular and genetic disruptions. With extensive expertise in handling various alleles, genetic backgrounds, and specialized dietary conditions, such as high-fat diets, MBP ensures that each phenotyping study is tailored to the specific requirements of your project. Whether you’re investigating genetic functions, disease mechanisms, or therapeutic outcomes, our advanced capabilities and experienced team deliver detailed, multi-dimensional data to enhance your research.

Behavior Phenotyping

Genetically altered mice often develop behavioral changes due to mutations. Our dedicated behavioral core provides standardized tests to quickly screen for anomalies in:

  • Memory and learning
  • Motivation and cognition
  • Motor and sensory abilities

We then follow up with detailed secondary and tertiary tests. All protocols are pre-approved by the UC Davis IACUC, and modifications can be applied if needed. Common tests include:

  • Open Field, Rota-Rod, Grip Strength
  • Elevated Plus Maze, Fear Conditioning, Startle PPI
  • Social Dyadic Interaction, Resident/Intruder, Nesting Behavior
  • Morris Water Maze, Radial Arm Water Maze, Novelty Preference

Comprehensive data analysis and consultation are also available upon request.
